Hello…

Hello on a different note, not like the Hello Adele sings, the melancholy of that song…aint nobody got time for that!

A happy hello, a hello like a bright shiny sun that shines back at me while contemplating my new year…..

The Dallas Farmer’s Market is my 1st stop grocery store. Its that special place I buy quality, organic, real foods, that dictate my menu’ of the week and to grab a bite of something new! If you haven’t been you need to, there are so many things going on down there, wine tastings, walk about’s with the chef, cooking lessons are just a few and some cool new shops and eateries! Its my way of getting out of my weekly routine, seeing new faces, making a bit of conversation with some vendors that believe in what they do and have passion for what they sell. IMG_2426

The roof top of South Side on Lamar Lofts is beautiful. The view, the whole downtown, it helped me with perspective. Putting it all together, what I like to do, what I want to do, breathtaking, both the rooftop view and rereading everything on my “what makes me happy to do” list, lol. IMG_2597.jpg

Discovering Opening Bell Coffee, a cozy coffee shop downtown that makes an awesome almond mylk cappuccino and sells the most delicious gluten free cinnamon rolls in the world! makes all the difference in life!

Joanna Bondy, Stocks & Bondy , shared her story at the walk about with the chef this month. She said “…at 52 years of age I decided what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.” Pure inspiration, I needed that. I needed that sunny day downtown, I needed that perspective from the rooftop and I needed and enjoyed a special, longed for treat with a good friend.

I am doing just that.

Taverna @DineTaverna

TAVERNA ~ Dallas, TX

I really enjoyed my brunch at Taverna. First off, I appreciate the “fresh squeezed” Orange Juice, immensely! Yes $6 might be a high price but when you are used to real orange juice, you squeeze your own oranges at home, you hate concentrate or any bottled so called orange juices not only for their awful taste but for all the junk they are made of and how bad they are for you, it is so nice to go out for Brunch and enjoy a freshly squeezed orange juice! So here you see, I really appreciate a restaurant that uses real – fresh -ingredients and serves freshly squeezed orange juice, thank you Taverna!

The atmosphere at Taverna is allegra, the inside dining area showed tables of Saturday morning Brunchers, a couple tables with balloons noticeably celebrating birthdays, the room was full but cozy. The brick walls, the open kitchen and bar give the atmosphere a warm feeling, typically Italian 🙂 The waiters are very polite, professional and friendly. The front of the restaurant opens in a very European style where customers can enjoy eating alfresco and furry friends are comfortable.

I ordered the Chef’s (oven baked ) Frittata; shrimp, arugula, white onion, toasted baby heirloom tomatoes with avocado a delicately delicious combination! Jeff ordered “Eggs Any Style”, scrambled with ham and breakfast potatoes and was very happy with his meal also.

We were delighted to have been offered a few slices of their San Daniele, Prosciutto Crudo, it was delicious, I was impressed 🙂

All of the ingredients in the food were very fresh and natural tasting. The Lunch and Dinner Menus are inviting, typical Italian plates and a nice variety to choose from, including Gluten Free Menus 🙂  Which leaves me with the intention of coming back again!

Buon Appetito!

A Conversation with Chef Brian Malarkey & Addie Broyles  @brianmalarkley @broylesa

IMG_7870

Addie Broyles and Chef Malarkey were great speakers! They spoke about food, restaurants and life.

Chef Malarkey, owner of 7 successful restaurants, uniquely named by his love for fabrics, Seersucker, Herringbone to name a couple. I really loved this idea, the combination of two of the things I love, he brought together. Yes, I was very intoned to what he had to say and his stories. Stories of his childhood, what makes the guy and how he works. I have to say I was intrigued by it all.

Take a look for yourself, http://brianmalarkey.com

At the end of the interview, conversation, explanation and advise he gave us an anteprima of what was next on his menu. He said “breakfast for dinner, eggs and…..” I think I fell in love right there.

Lunch was sponsored by Whole Foods and gift cards were given out to venture out into Austin’s huge gastronomic REAL FOOD court.

I spent most my time exploring (part) of the store and taking photos. I filled my plate with a little of not nearly everything; Poblano goat cheese mashed potatoes, blue cheese stuffed portobello mushroom, Korean short ribs, chinese pork roast, balsamic roasted beets to name a few of my samples, Oh! and also took a taste of the Pork belly that was being prepared by request. I finally sat to eat I realized my lunch break was nearly finished which didn’t stop me from clicking photos while semi sitting down with a fork in my hand trying to stuff the delicious food in my mouth.

A Clean Eater’s Aromatherapy

The aroma of pork loin roast with potatoes lingers behind the strong smell of minestrone in the house. The smell of home cooked food warms the atmosphere and cuddles me. Moving from room to room it’s almost a sense of reassurance, positivity, kindness and warmth. It kindles the spirit so to say. I think aromas, especially aromas of fresh cooking foods really plays a positive and important role in our lives. In mine it does.

Our bodies need to be nourished to grow (when we are young) and to function well (at all ages). We receive the nutrients from fresh foods, not junk or fast or ready made foods. Those types of food do not do what our bodies need to grow or to function well. There should not be pain from eating; indigestion, heart burn, drowsiness, to name a few. Our bodies should feel energized and our spirit happy and energetic after we have nourished it. This only happens if you eat real, natural, non processed food.

Fast food, junk food and processed foods are substitutes to real food and bad ones at that. They lie. They give us the mirage of perfect taste and they leave us empty of what food is supposed to do to our bodies. They are foods that give our bodies what they don’t need like; added salts, sugars, colorings, preservatives and chemical ingredients that our bodies DO NOT NEED. They don’t nourish us, they hurt us. Many times after eating these types of food we can actually still feel hungry within only minutes after we’ve eaten. That is our body saying “WHERE’S THE FOOD!”, “I NEED NOURISHMENT!”

The more sugar and carbohydrates you eat the more insulin your body creates, it’s a viscous circle!!

All fast foods and processed foods are full of sugar!! The more sugar and carbs you eat they more you will want them.

http://bestweightlossdiet1.com/obesity-the-vicious-circle/

http://foodmd.me/2012/01/25/sugar-is-bad-mmmk/

Our bodies need sugars and carbohydrates from natural sources NOT from synthetic sources. We only need to eat naturally and our bodies and minds are in peace with each other. When nourished properly our body reacts and works to fight off illness’ and disease, our bodies are stronger and healthier. If we eat junk our bodies do not have what it needs to function properly and we are weak and unhealthy.  Vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates are what we need not the junk they are selling us.

I personally know the difference. We are so much stronger than we think, inside and out, especially if we eat real natural food. http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-11119/3-food-rules-to-end-all-confusion-about-what-to-eat.html

Eccomi!

Since I was a child I  always loved blueberries, especially in pancakes and muffins. Pancakes soaked and drowning in maple flavored corn syrup and  muffins filled with some sort of terrible plastic based spread that didn’t even really taste like butter but I couldn’t get enough of. And then again, the  blueberries,  most likely canned, packed with artificial ingredients and loaded with sugar. This is all in the past for me, those “Old fashioned foods”. I now understand the continuous want for sugar and carbs and the lethargic effect it had on me, none the less the dormant feeling in my tongue and then the allergic reactions.  After being in the ER twice and seeing an Allergist I found out that I am allergic to “additives” in packaged food products. The Allergist gave me a strict clean diet to follow for 6 months to detox myself. I am anemic, IGA deficient and have Thalassemia, which leads me to  being more susceptible to the negative effects of unhealthy eating and that how I nourish myself is very important, both physically and mentally. That was the beginning…….

I am a “Clean Eater” I don’t eat refined sugars,  gluten,  red meat,  white meat,  fast food or junk food. I eat fish, eggs, nuts, fruits, vegetables and for now, only some dairy on special occasions or in special recipes. After cutting certain things out completely from my diet I feel so much better. I feel normal. I am free!  I love to cook, I love planning my meals for the week, trying new recipes and making my own. This is how I live and eat, Judifood 🙂
